RALEIGH N.C. – During a November meeting of its board of directors, The John William Pope Foundation awarded $2.21 million in grants to human service, animal, arts, and education nonprofit organizations.  Of that total, $1.43 million went to 58 nonprofits in the greater Triangle region.

Most groups had received support from the Pope Foundation in previous years, including several nonprofits in Vance County.  However, new to the Pope Foundation’s giving list were Boys and Girls Club of North Central North Carolina, Catholic Charities, InterAct, North Carolina Master Chorale, Reality Ministries, Safe Families for Children Alliance, and Triangle Literacy Council.

Also included in the Pope Foundation’s November giving was a $200,000, two-year grant to SECU Family House in Chapel Hill for their $8 million building campaign.  SECU Family House provides safe, affordable housing for patients who travel to UNC Hospitals for outpatient care.  The building campaign will add 35 guest rooms.

Additionally in September, the Pope Foundation granted $65,000 in direct relief support to areas impacted by Hurricanes Harvey and Maria.  Those grant recipients included the Salvation Army in Texas and Puerto Rico and Texas food banks in Houston, Corpus Christi and Beaumont.  In 2016, the Pope Foundation made similar direct relief grants to North Carolina nonprofits in the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew.  A list of September and November grants and recipients is below.

Founded in 1986 and located in Raleigh, the Pope Foundation makes grants to advance individual freedom, personal responsibility and encourage opportunity for all North Carolinians. The Pope Foundation’s lifetime giving totals more than $145 million directed to over 400 nonprofits.  The Pope Foundation receives its support from the Pope family, owner and operator of the Henderson-based Variety Wholesalers, Inc.
