Over $1.68 million awarded to nonprofits
The John William Pope Foundation is pleased to announce it awarded $1.68 million in grants this winter. Recipient nonprofits included those working in youth education, hunger and housing solutions, addiction treatment, arts performances and exhibitions, and support for justice-involved individuals.
“Our family foundation has a long history of supporting North Carolina families and communities through nonprofits, and we were pleased to continue that tradition this year,” said foundation Chairman Art Pope. “Whether providing medical services to the working uninsured, music instruction to disadvantaged students, or other critically needed programs in our community, these organizations are working tirelessly for the people they serve. And the end result is increased opportunities for more North Carolinians.”
More than $1.1 million went directly to nonprofits located in and around the Triangle, with many of them doing work with statewide benefits such as child-abuse prevention and jobs training. While most grants were for general operating support, some grants supported specific endeavors. Special-project grants in the Triangle included:
- $15,000 to Children’s Home Society of North Carolina to support foster-family recruitment in Wake County
- $15,000 to the Catholic Charities Diocese of Raleigh for the Support Circles program for homeless families.
- $10,000 to Preservation North Carolina for its project to relocate two historic Oberlin Road homes, preserving African American history in Raleigh and providing a new headquarters for the group.
Also included in this group of Triangle grants was $119,500 to multiple nonprofits working specifically for Vance County residents. Vance County is the home of Variety Wholesalers, owned and operated by the Pope Family.
Outside of the Triangle-area giving, the Pope Foundation distributed funds to multiple causes including, arts, schools, and animals. Highlights included:
- $100,000 granted to StepUp Wilmington and $50,000 granted to Artspace through the 2020 Joy W. Pope Memorial Grants in Human Services and the Arts. Both groups will unveil their special projects later this year.
- $80,000 was granted to thoroughbred-related nonprofits, primarily based in Lexington, Kentucky. Recipients included Backstretch Employee Services Team of NY for citizenship classes for track employees ($5,000); Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation for a study examining PET technology’s use in the early detection of fetlock lesions in horses ($50,000); New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program for their work in caring for retired thoroughbreds ($15,000); and Thoroughbred Charities of America for further grant distribution ($10,000).
