JWPF awards over $330K to Vance County nonprofits

RALEIGH — The John William Pope Foundation announced it awarded $339,500 in grants tononprofits in Vance County. Most organizations that received grants are focused on housing, hungerand youth development as well as the performing arts.
“Giving back in Vance County is important to the mission of our family foundation,” said JWPFChairman Art Pope. “The nonprofits in Vance County are making a true impact on improving the lives and livelihood of its citizens and we are proud to have them as partners as they continue their good work.”
Founded by its namesake, JWPF started in 1986 to help channel the charitable giving for the family business, Variety Wholesalers. The company later acquired Roses stores, founded in Henderson, after it emerged from bankruptcy protection. Today, Roses is still headquartered in Vance County and employs more than 700.
In total, JWPF donated $339,500 split among 4 Point 0, Hub Zone, Area Christians Together in Service, LifeLine Outreach, Boys and Girls Club of Vance County, S.a.M. Advocacy Center, CommunityPartners of Hope, Turning Point, Edmonds Tennis Club, Rebuilding Hope, McGregor Hall, Make a Wish, Henderson YMCA and Masonic Home for Children.
The JWPF is a private family grantmaker that supports nonprofit public policy research, education, human services, and the arts with the goal of improving the wellbeing of North Carolinians. Since1986, the foundation has given more than $244 million to these causes. The Pope Foundation receives its support from the Pope family, the owners and operators of Variety Wholesalers, based in Henderson.
