John William Pope Foundation Awards over $10 million to nonprofits

RALEIGH, NC: The John William Pope Foundation announced it awarded more than $10.8 million in grants to nonprofits. The organizations that received grants are focused on public policy, higher education, student development and America’s 250th Anniversary.

“The Declaration of Independence is true to our Foundation’s principles,” said John William Pope Foundation Chairman Art Pope. “We are proud to be celebrating America’s 250th anniversary with multiple projects that share North Carolina’s role in the Revolution and the creation of our great nation.”

In total, the John William Pope Foundation awarded more than $15.41 million in grants to nonprofits during the 2024-2025 fiscal year. The previous grant cycle gave to human services, arts and Hurricane Helene relief.

The John William Pope Foundation is a private family grantmaker that supports nonprofit public policy research, education, human services, and the arts with the goal of improving the wellbeing of North Carolinians. Since 1986, the foundation has given more than $250 million to these causes. The Pope Foundation receives its support from the Pope family, the owners and operators of Variety Wholesalers, Inc. based in Henderson, NC.
