Pope Foundation Contributes Over $1 Million to Local Community Nonprofits

RALEIGH, N.C. JAN. 5, 2010 — Art Pope, President of the John William Pope Foundation, announced today that the Foundation’s board has approved $1,014,500 in local grants, primarily awarded to arts, religious, youth, humanitarian, and educational organizations. During the fall/winter grant cycle, the Pope Foundation focuses its efforts on the local community, seeking to fund groups that strive to advance the well being of citizens in Wake, Vance, and other surrounding counties. Many of the organizations, such as the Raleigh Rescue Mission, Urban Ministries of Wake County, Alliance Medical Ministry, and Habitat for Humanity, focus on alleviating poverty, poor health, and housing deficiencies. Others, like the N.C. Opera, Ballet, Theatre, Symphony, and Performance Edge, build cultural depth within the community. Pope Foundation Completes $5 Million Grant to Campbell University’s Convocation Center

RALEIGH, N.C. DEC. 12, 2008 — The John William Pope Foundation has completed its final installment to Campbell University for the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center. The Pope family, through its Foundation, gave a total of $5 million over the last five years to help complete the building that houses Campbell’s new athletic center and hosts other university-wide events such as graduation ceremonies. The Pope Foundation gift was made in memory of the late John W. Pope Jr., who graduated from Campbell in 1975. The state-of-the-art, multi-purpose facility will seat about 3,700 spectators for athletic events and up to 5,000 for special events such as concerts, graduation activities, and other community gatherings. In addition to the main arena, the Center includes training and weight rooms, a practice facility, sport locker rooms, athletic offices, a hospitality room, labs and classrooms for the exercise science department, and the Campbell Sports Hall of Fame.
